Stories of Community from Marists across New Zealand

Ruatahuna is a place unlike any other. Deep in Te Urewera, the town of Ruatahuna is located 90 kilometres west of Gisborne, and 18 kilometres northwest of Lake Waikaremoana.

Lenny Te Kaawa, a farmer and local kaumatua looks after us during our stay. We are welcomed on to Uwhiarae Marae which holds to the Ringatu Faith. During our stay we are often woken by the quiet chanting of the liturgy during the small hours of the morning. We are privileged to be guided to Maungapohatu in the shadow of Tuhoe's sacred mountain. Lenny's son-in-law, Daz, takes us up into the bush and shares stories about the land and its people.

Ruatahuna was so far from my own experience
